Understanding how other people see and feel things throughout their lives can be a difficult thing when we get it in our heads that we can’t relate. Indeed, there are many things that seem to divide humans and make us feel like our differences are too large to overcome. Different cultural backgrounds, different beliefs, growing up in different eras, different desires, different languages – these are too often seen and less often understood, and rarely embraced. But what if you discovered that every problem, every insecurity, every setback, every trauma — every experience that another person has is, in fact, relatable to your own? What if you came to realizes that these differences can be key in understanding our sameness? In this approach to accessing empathy, participants will break down the world we live in based upon an infinite list of what we have in common, and adjust our understanding of just how far-reaching these commonalities truly are. From there, we will practice this new understanding by measuring it up against our greatest social obstacle: other humans who have experienced life differently than we do.
