Welcome! By taking this class you will learn basic movements of Balintawak, a practical Filipino self-defense system.
We’ll cover blocks, strikes, stance, and movement while highlighting both self-defense application and martial elements of the moves.
Balintawak is a straightforward and incredibly fun martial art with real world application. This class is open to all levels of martial artists – from those on their first class to those who have been training for years. The class is also open to all ages (though it is recommended for students 8-years-old and up).
Everyone is welcome. Everyone can learn these strikes. And everyone who joins us will get to play and get to work.
ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:
Hi! My name is Katie Marshall!
I have been training martial arts for over 7 years and teaching for 3. I achieved “Completion of The Art” in Taboada Balintawak Cuentada in November 2019.
I am deeply passionate about teaching martial arts and self-defense skills to women, girls, female identifying and non-binary humans. I lead self-defense seminars and make it a priority to teach female identifying humans. I believe Balintawak is one of the most efficient and practical styles of martial arts – not to mention one of the most fun.
I love this system. I love this art. I can’t wait to train with you!

Class is on a sliding scale of $5-$25.
An important note:
Balintawak is a stick-based system. We will use a stick for strikes and blocks. To participate in class, you will either need an Eskrima stick or something similar from around your house.
Paying $25 for class includes 1 Eskrima stick. If you would like to purchase a stick, please message me directly via Facebook by 4/14 and I will deliver a new, sterile stick to you by 4/15.
If you would prefer to use something around the house for the first couple classes, think something about 18″ long. Not a pool stick, but not a pen. You could theoretically use whatever kind of striking tool feels good to you, such as a long wooden spatula or a stick from your yard. It’s an adaptable system! We’ll figure it out!
